Graduate Admission
All M.F.A. applicants must first comply with the requirements for admission to the Graduate School as specified in the Graduate Studies Bulletin. Upon request the Graduate School will furnish the necessary forms. Materials and Information required by the Fine Arts Department:
1) A portfolio of no more than 15 slides in a plastic sheet. Slides must be mounted in cardboard and each slide must be labeled with name, medium, size and approximate date of completion. Each slide must be marked with a red dot on the lower left hand corner. An inventory list with the same information should accompany the slides. CD's, DVD's and VHS limited to 10 minutes, are also welcome. Please enclose an envelope with postage if you want your portfolio returned. While great care will be taken in handling all portfolios, the department will not be responsible for loss or damage.
2) A complete set of official transcripts (in addition to the ones required by the Graduate School).
3) Those applying for a Teaching Assistantship must furnish three letters of recommendation. Also, they must indicate in which areas they are qualified to assist and teach.
4) A statement indicating which area within the two or three dimensional group the student intends to specialize: sculpture, ceramics, painting, etc.
5) If out of the ordinary equipment or facilities are needed, the applicant should inquire if they are available in the department.
Criteria for Admission
The principle criterion for admitting students into the program is the quality of the art work submitted and the potential for graduate-level development it suggests. Grades, letters of recommendation, and professional experience will also have a bearing on the decision.
Final Selection
The final selection of students for admission into the MFA degree program is arrived at by faculty vote and ranking, with those receiving the most votes for admission and the highest ranking being given priority. The same procedure applies to the awarding of teaching assistantships.
Application Deadlines
Fine Arts Deadline: January 15th
Graduate School Deadline: February 1
The Fine Arts Department selects students for admission into the M.F.A. program once each year. Applicants must complete their application to the Graduate School by February 1. All application material required by the Fine Arts Department must reach the department on or before January 15th. Those who fail to meet these deadlines cannot count on being considered for admission the following school year. Students who wish to prepare for study leading to the Master of Fine Arts should have an undergraduate art major with 40 or more semester hours in art. Of those applicants who meet the minimum requirements for admission to Graduate School approximately 20-25 percent are selected for admission into the Master of Fine Arts program.
